HUNTINGDON, PA- Senior quarterback Ward Udinski (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West), who completed a stellar four-year career with Juniata this past fall, will continue his football career overseas. Udinski has signed a contract for one year to play for the Munich Cowboys of the German Football League.
Former Eagle offensive coordinator Mike Newton is in the same position with the Cowboys. He contacted Udinski shortly after taking the job.
"He (Coach Newton) called me and said they were looking for a QB," said Udinski. "It was a complicated situation because they had camp last week and their season starts in two weeks but with graduation I told them I couldn't get out their until May. Initially, I didn't think it would work out but they decided they wanted me to come out even if it was a few weeks late."
Udinski is excited to be playing again. "It's definitely going to be an interesting experience in terms of playing with guys of German descent," he said. "The whole culture is going to be awesome."
The GFL tries to mirror its game off of the NFL. The teams use a regulation NFL football and play a 14 game regular season. Udinski says for the most part all the schemes are similar to the college game.
Udinski recently started working for Johnson and Johnson in New Jersey as a sales strategy analyst while finishing up his class work. He says he is fortunate that the company is allowing him to play football and that he will return to his job when the season is over.
Udinski ended his Juniata career as the most prolific passer in the football program's history. In his four years in an Eagle uniform, he became the school's all-time leader in completions (734), passing yards (8,616), and total yards (rushing and passing-10,756). In his senior campaign of 2014, he completed 221 out of 333 passes (66.4%) for 2,878 yards and 18 touchdowns. On the ground, he ran for 661 yards and his 17 touchdowns led the Centennial Conference. Udinski ran for 100 yards twice and had three three-touchdown games.
At the conclusion of the 2014 season, Udinski was named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year along with being named to the First Team. USA College Football also selected him as a Third Team All-American.
