HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College field hockey surpassed Ramapo College of New Jersey 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at Winton Hill Field during an ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic quarterfinal contest.
In the 66th minute, sophomore Emma Dahmus (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) struck a penalty corner to the stick of junior Caroline Phillips (Wilmington, Del./Concord). Phillips rocketed the ball towards the goal face, where senior Brittany Kauffman (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) met the ball and tapped it in for her first goal of the season.
The one Juniata (11-8) mark would prove to be all that the Eagles needed to get by the Roadrunners, as junior goalie Janelle Howard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led a flawless Juniata defense. The Eagle defense faced ten Ramapo (11-6) shots, only four of which were on goal, where they were turned aside by Howard.
Juniata fired 20 shots at Ramapo goalie Rebecca Elliott, with Kauffman leading the shooting charge with seven. Phillips and senior Shauna Deschenes (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) each pitched in three shots.
With the win, Juniata broke its four-game losing streak and advances to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Semifinals. Juniata will face the winner of Wednesday night's contest between no. 2 Alvernia University and no. 7 FDU-Florham on Saturday, Nov. 12 at a place and time yet to be determined.
