HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata field hockey team won in thrilling fashion, 3-2, over visiting Hood College Thursday evening at Knox Stadium.
Mackenzie Long had a goal and an assist, while Kaylyn Nierzwicki and Haleigh Wolverton each scored once. Sophia Ganley had an assist while Kara Stringfellow made seven saves in goal for the Eagles.
The teams were scoreless heading into halftime, with the Blazers holding a 3-1 advantage in shots.
Nierzwicki smacked a loose ball in front of the goal, past the keeper to get Juniata on the board. Five minutes later, the Blazers answered to tie things at one. The teams headed into the fourth tied, and both offenses continued to flourish.
First, in the 48th minute, Ganley passed the ball off to Long on the left side of the shooting circle. She smashed a shot through the crowd into the cage to put the Eagles back on top. The Blazers needed only 21 seconds to again tie things at 2-2.
In the 54th minute, Wolverton redirected a Long shot off a penalty corner to give the Eagles the lead and eventually the win.
Hood had an advantage in shots, 16-6, and in penalty corners 4-3.
The Eagles will host Marywood, Saturday at 1:00.
