HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College men's soccer made a clean sweep of Landmark Conference awards this week with junior Robby Higgins (Middletown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) earning Offensive Player of the Week and freshman Jonathan Phillips (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) named Defensive Play of the Week.
Higgins scored the only goal in Juniata's dramatic 1-0 overtime victory against The University of Scranton on Saturday. The win snapped Scranton's eight-game-unbeaten streak and marked the first victory for the Eagles over the Royals in program history. In Juniata's mid week victory over Penn State Altoona, Higgins earned the assist on the game-winning goal.
"Robby has really become a leader within the team," said head coach Dan Dubois. "He's great a sticking to the game plan, getting himself in good positions like he always has, that got him an assist on the game winner on Tuesday and got him the game winner on Saturday in a huge match. His hard work is really paying off."
Phillips came up with five saves in the 100-minute match against Scranton and helped earn the seventh shutout of the year for the team. The win moved the Eagles to 1-0 in conference play for the first time since the foundation of the Landmark.
"Jonathan, he was put into such a difficult situation in his first conference match," said to Dubois. "To come up with a shut out and some big saves – he helped control the defense and keep a very good offense under control. He did a great job. I think this is going to be the first of a number of times that he gets recognized.
