Men's volleyball adds seven to the roster for 2011-12

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College men's volleyball will be bolstered by the arrival of seven newcomers in 2011-12, as the Eagles prepare to hunt for their first NCAA Division III championship.

Joe Bortak (Jeannette, Pa./Penn Trafford), Mark Feiler (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield), Paul Kuhn (York, Pa./Central York), Adam Masood (Irving, Texas/Greenhill School), Eric McCarthy (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook), Kyle Rodgers (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee), and Justin Waldorf (Eden, N.Y./Eden) have all committed to continue their academic careers at Juniata, while competing in men's volleyball for head coach Kevin Moore.

Bortak, a 6-6 middle hitter, was a Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association (PVCA) All-State selection out of Penn Trafford High School, where he was a two-year letterwinner and team captain as a senior. He was named both All-WPIAL and all-section following his junior and senior seasons, and went on to earn All-America honors at the 2011 USA Volleyball Boys' Junior Olympic National Championships.

The son of Rich and Pam Bortak, Joe will study elementary education at Juniata College.

Feiler, a 6-4 outside hitter, was a PVCA All-State and two-time all-district selection while helping lead Hempfield High School to a pair of Lancaster-Lebanon League championships and a PIAA District 3 title during his senior season. A two-year letterwinner, Feiler earned Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star honors in each of the past two years.

The son of Gerald and Elizabeth Feiler, Mark is planning on studying information technology at Juniata.

Kuhn, a 6-6 outside hitter, earned PVCA All-State honors for the second consecutive year while guiding Central York High School to a PIAA Class 3A state championship. He was an all-county and All-District 3 honoree as a junior.

The son of Robert and Cheryl Kuhn, Paul will be pursuing exploratory studies at Juniata College with an interest in either the engineering or healthcare fields.

Masood, a 5-10 libero and defensive specialist, is coming off a senior campaign in which he captained Greenhill School to an undefeated regular season, dropping only six sets all season long. An all-conference selection and team most valuable player as a junior, Masood is a six-year veteran of the DFW High Intensity club program and his 181 squad finished 23rd overall at the 2011 USA Volleyball Junior National Championship in Minneapolis, Minn.

The son of Asif and Julie Masood, Adam will study physics and pre-engineering at Juniata College.

McCarthy, a 5-9 libero, was a four-year starter for Willowbrook High School, setting records for single-season and career digs. He was named to the Chicago Sun-Times' Illinois Fab 50 as a senior, and earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Second team All-America honors. A six-year member of the Sports Performance Volleyball club, he was named best libero at the 2010-11 Palos Point Series, one of the top club volleyball tournaments in the Midwest.

The son of John and Jo McCarthy, Eric will be studying psychology at Juniata College.

Rodgers, a 6-8 middle hitter, was a four-year starter at Atlee High School, capturing First team All-Capital District honors as a senior. He earned All-Academic honors in both volleyball and basketball, where he was a three-year starter at center and forward.

The son of Robert and Robin Rodgers, Kyle plans on studying business at Juniata.

Waldorf, a 6-4 outside hitter and libero/defensive specialist, took All-State and All-Western New York honors as a senior while leading Eden High School to three division titles and two sectional championships. A three-year varsity starter, he was an All-Erie County Interscholastic Conference (ECIC) selection as a junior. Waldorf played his club volleyball with the Eden Volleyball Club.

The son of Jeff and Karen Waldorf, Justin is undecided on a program of emphasis at Juniata College and will start out in the exploratory studies program.

Juniata completed its 2011 season, its final as a member of the EIVA, with an 18-12 overall record and an 8-0 mark in the EIVA's Hay Division. The Moore-guided Eagles return five starters from last season, including Second team All-EIVA middle hitter Ben Wolff (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) who averaged 2.08 kills and 0.89 blocks last season.
