HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College Athletics Director Greg Curley has named Pat Shawaryn ('04) the interim head men's volleyball coach after former head coach Kevin Moore resigned to pursue another coaching opportunity. Shawaryn has been a part of Juniata volleyball for over seven years. He was a member of the 2004 National Championship squad and 2003 National Runner-up team.
"I'm happy to be here; I love this school," said Shawaryn. "I appreciate everything Kevin has done, not just as a friend, but a mentor. He's been great. It was his career move. We talked to the guys and they understand."
Shawaryn is no stranger to coaching. He has been an assistant coach for the men since 2011, women's volleyball since 2012, and helped Juniata to four conference titles, four player of the year honors, and 25 all-conference selections during his tenure. Prior to coming back to Juniata, Shawaryn was the head girls volleyball coach at his alma mater Hempfield High School from 2009-11, where he led them to section, league, and district championships all three of his seasons, and a state title in 2010.
His athletic success began in his high school days as a 4-year letterwinner in both soccer and volleyball. During the course of his career at Hempfield, Shawaryn was all-district and two-time all-league in soccer; and a four-time all-section, four-time all-league, four-time all-district, and four-time all-state libero in volleyball. He helped take his teams to five elite-8 appearances in Pennsylvania state tournaments, winning a volleyball state championship his freshman year.
Shawaryn has also been an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Juniata since 2012 working with the football, track and field, soccer and field hockey programs. He graduated with a degree in politics, concentration in law and philosophy, with a minor in history and criminal justice. His first match at the helm will be at No. 15 Stevenson University on Friday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. He and the Eagles then head out to Cairn University on Saturday, March 8 for a 2 p.m. match.
