BUFFALO, N.Y.- The #2 Juniata men's volleyball team ended the regular season with two wins, defeating Mount Aloysius College 3-0 and Nazareth University 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the Sports Arena on the campus of Buffalo State.
Against the Mounties in set one, Juniata hit .500 and used a 9-1 run to blow the game open as a Jared Johnson kill made it 21-6. Noah Rosner won the set with a kill 25-8.
An 11-1 surge out the gates in set two featured a pair of Logan Peterson aces and two kills each by Lucas Riccardi and Deondre Sheffey. Later, with the score at 23-8, an ace from Chris Thomas pushed JC to set point, and a block by Shawn Legge ended things 25-8.
In the third, the Mounties narrowed the Eagle advantage to eight late, 20-12, before the Eagles responded with kills from Legge, Ricciardi, and two from David Dziekonski to reach set point. Joshua Nation ended the match with his second kill of the day.
In set one against the Golden Flyers, Junita found themselves trailing midway through 13-16. Two errors, a kill from Phillips and a block by Palombo and Baier, gave JC the lead back at 17-16. The teams traded points to get to 19 all, before Mellor paired with a Golden Flyer attack error for a kill and block, giving the Eagles a three-point lead. Juniata maintained the lead the rest of the way, with a Peterson kill taking set one, 25-22.
Juniata used a .500 hitting percentage with a quick 11-4 start to take control and never look back in set two. The Golden Flyers got the Eagle advantage down to six a few times, but JC never let them get back into the set as Tyler Phillips ended set two 25-16.
The Eagles flipped a 12-13 scoreline to 19-14 as they capitalized on several Golden Flyer errors along with a kill and an ace from Peterson. Baier's ace, along with a few Nazareth errors, ended the match, 25-17.
Juniata completes the regular season 27-2, and has earned the #2 seed in the Continental Volleyball Conference Tournament. Their reward is a bye and a spot in the semifinals, where they will play the winner of Elizabethtown vs Rutgers-Newark.
