BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Juniata College senior Rachel Nagy (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) set a new Juniata career doubles record, but Moravian College spoiled the day by taking both ends of a doubleheader off the Eagles, 3-1 and 10-3, on Saturday afternoon at Moravian's Blue & Grey Field.
In the second game of the twinbill, Juniata (13-14, 3-5 Landmark) jumped all over Moravian in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles touched game two starter Jenna Carmon for four hits in the opening frame, including the record-setting 37th career double by Nagy that scored Sarah Eckard (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) from second. Jennifer O'Neill (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) followed up with a single up the middle to plate Nagy, while Amanda Gerlach (Mesa, Ariz./Marcos de Niza) laced a single into left center that allowed O'Neill to score.
Eckard's two singles led the Eagles offensively in game two, while Nagy, O'Neill, Gerlach, and Steph Frith (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) had one hit each.
Juniata starter Stacy Nagy (Millerton, Pa./Troy) allowed six earned runs on nine hits over her six complete innings in the circle, and dropped to 6-8 with the loss.
Carmon improved to 15-6 with the win in game two, despite allowing three runs on six hits. She recorded a pair of strikeouts over the Eagles. Reliever Elizabeth Python came on in the seventh in relief of Carmon, and issued one walk with one strikeout.
In game one, senior Alyssa Erb (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidysburg) allowed three runs, two earned, while scattering seven hits and fanning five Greyhounds in her first appearance in the circle in two weeks. She had been sidelined since the Drew University series on April 2 due to a knee knjury.
Moravian chalked up two runs off Erb in the third inning. A two-out walk issued to Katie Gross turned into the first Greyhound run when Samantha Mulderig doubled her home. Mulderig crossed on the next at bat, when Dizinno's grounder to short was thrown away from first base.
Juniata cut the margin in half in the top of the fourth. Amanda Gerlach's (Mesa, Ariz./Marcos de Niza) base hit up the middle scored Jennifer O'Neill (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) from second, after O'Neill got aboard with a fielder's choice grounder to short.
The Eagles had a chance to tie the game in the fourth with runners at first and second and one out, but Moravian starter Carmon forced Tessa Sternbach (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson County Tech) to ground into a double play to get the Greyhounds out of the frame.
The Greyhounds added an insurance run in the sixth on Maura Agnew's one-out RBI single to right field.
Carmon fanned four Eagles while allowing just two Juniata hits on her way to the complete game win. Erb felled to 7-6 with the loss.
Juniata continues Landmark Conference play this week, as it hosts Susquehanna University on Thursday, April 22, at 3:00 p.m. on Weaver Park Field.
