HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College softball team was one of three Landmark Conference programs to earn National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-Academic Team honors. The Eagles earned a 3.254 team grade point average (GPA), the second highest Landmark school represented, and saw five named All-America Scholar-Athletes.
"I'm proud that they work hard in the classroom and on the field," said head coach Sam Kszepka. "We have goals academically and athletically. I hope to continue to improve each and every year on both aspects."
Eagles who received All-America Scholar-Athlete nods were graduates Jen Ashcraft and Steph Frith, senior Lydia Gorba (Portage, Pa./Portage), junior Katie Schroeder (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown), and sophomore Lauren Lesser (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Holy Cross).
Juniata had two student-athletes in the top five for the conference. Ashcraft led all Landmark student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Schroder was one of the five with over a 3.86 GPA.
The Eagles finished the 2013 season with an 11-18 record. They earned a trip to the Landmark tournament for the first time since 2010 and made it to the semifinals by ousting Moravian College before bowing out to eventual champion Susquehanna University. Susquehanna and Moravian were the other two teams recognized on the NFCA's list.
