HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Junior Katie Szczur (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) was named Landmark Conference defensive player of the week for women's soccer, the league announced Monday afternoon. The Johnstown native has been central to the Juniata defense that has only surrendered four goals in seven games this season.
"It's always a remarkable thing for a defensive player to be honored with a distinction like this because defense is a very quiet part of the game," said head coach Scott McKenzie. "Katie Szczur is a tremendous defender who commits herself to helping her teammates keep a clean sheet. I couldn't be happier for her."
Szczur anchored the Juniata defense, which held Saint Vincent College to just eight shots in the Eagles 2-0 mid-week victory. She netted her first career goal on an unassisted corner kick for the game winner against Lycoming College.
