KANSAS CITY, Kan. – For the twelfth consecutive year, the Juniata College women's soccer team has received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award, the organization announced this afternoon.
"We have special motivated driven kids at Juniata," said head coach Scott McKenzie. "In the recruiting process, with everyone that has played for me here, one of my standard lines is, if you're a serious student, please consider Juniata. If you're a serious athlete please consider Juniata. Casual athletes and casual students need not apply. That's really the way it is. They aren't casually students or casually studying. If I get rushed into the ER I'd sure hope these pre-med kids went to their lab and not practice."
The NSCAA team academic award is present to teams that achieve a 3.0, or higher, combined grade point average (GPA) across both academic semesters. The award is then announced after the following soccer season. The Eagles achieved a 3.19 team GPA in the 2012-2013 academic year.
"We talk a lot with this program about being a 'both and' person rather than an 'either or' person," said McKenzie. "You can be both an elite level athlete and an elite student. It doesn't have to be either or. I'd much rather live in a 'both and' world and these kids go out and do it. I get the luxury of being able to pontificate about these things, but they get to go out and live it."
