GLENSIDE, PA- Olivia Claycomb's (Saxton, PA/Tussey Mountain) goal in the 75th minute was all that the women's soccer team needed as the Eagles shutout DeSales University 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Arcadia University's Easton Field. The win halts a two-game winless streak for Juniata as its record improves to 2-3 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 0-3-1.
The contest was the consolation game of the Arcadia Classic. The Eagles won despite DeSales leading in shots, 17-7, and in corners 4-0. The Bulldogs had eight shots on goal to four for the Eagles but goalie Kerry Leonard (Cockeysville, MD/Maryvale Prep) stopped all seven attempts that came her way with one save credited to Katie Szczur (Johnstown, PA/Richland).
"After a disappointing performance yesterday, I am thrilled with the team's response today," said head coach Scott McKenzie after the game. "We kept our heads up and fought for each other. Its just what you would expect from a Juniata team."
After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs continued to pressure Juniata early in the second frame but a tough Juniata defense kept DeSales at bay. The Eagles got two saves from Leonard and a key stop from defender Szczur in the first 25 minutes of the period.
Juniata nearly took the lead in the 66th minute but Maggie Pozenel's (Croton-on-Hudson, NY / Croton-Harmon) shot glanced off of the crossbar. JC finally broke through at 74:27 as Claycomb got a one-on-one shot that she deposited into the right corner of the goal.
Juniata returns home to face Pitt-Bradford in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon. Game time from Winton Hill Field will be at 4 p.m. following the men's game at 2 p.m.
