WAYNESBURG, PA.- The Juniata women's soccer team began its 2016 season on Thursday afternoon with a trip to Western Pennsylvania to play Waynesburg. The Eagles picked up their first win of the season as they defeated the Yellowjackets 2-1.
The first 20 minutes of the game were hotly contested as both teams went back and forth. The Yellowjackets got off three shots in the first 12 minutes before the Eagles had their first attempt. On the Eagles' first shot of the day, Aubrie Christensen (Suwanee, Ga./Manheim Township (Pa.) gathered a pass from Maggie Pozenel (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton-Hudson) and beat the goalkeeper for the score as JC went up 1-0 in the 13th minute.

The second half saw the Eagles continue their assault on Waynesburg with a pair of shots on goal to start the frame. Anna Kauffman (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) would score on an assist from Caroline Braas (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) in the 54th minute to give Juniata a 2-0 lead.
Waynesburg finally broke through just under 10 minutes later to make it a 2-1 contest. Juniata's defense held firm as it allowed just one Yellowjacket shot in the final 27 minutes of play.
Kerry Leonard (Cockeysville, Md./Maryvale Prep) got the start in goal and turned away five shots.
Head coach Scott McKenzie said afterwards that his team's fitness was able to put Waynesburg at a disadvantage and that it was good to start the season with a road win. He was pleased with the outcome and called the victory a "quality win over a quality opponent."
Juniata will have little time to rest as it heads on the road again on Saturday to play Shenandoah. Game time from Winchester, Va. will be at 2:00 p.m.
