Huntingdon, Pa. – In part to great defense, the Juniata Eagles and the Westminster Titans kept the ended in a 0-0 tie on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Gibbel Stadium.
In the first half, each goalkeeper recorded three saves. Juniata's Kerry Leonard (Cockeysville, Md./Maryvale Prep.) saved three of their four shots on goal; the other was blocked by the Eagles' defense. Jessica Zavadak (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) marked two of Juniata's three shots on goal.
The momentum was on the Eagles' side during the second half of the game, but the Westminster defense was making them work for it. Majority of the action in the second half occurred in Titans' terrority, as Juniata got off seven shots. Due to great defense on both sides of the ball, including that of Amanda Kopacz (Green Brook, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) and Rebecca Hingley (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East), the game remained scoreless for the second half as well, putting the game into overtime.
Juniata again took charge at the beginning of overtime, taking two shots within the first three minutes. Sophomore Anna Kauffman's (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) shot was Westminster's goalkeeper's eighth save of the day, and senior Taylor Garraffa's (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) knocked off the post in the 93rd minute. The Titans later got off two shots, as Leonard recorded two more saves.
In the second overtime, Titans were the first to strike, taking a shot from the far left wing in the 104th minute. Unable to score on either end, the game ended in a tie.
"We had great energy and we created great chances around the goal. We just needed to be more efficient in front of the net," said head coach Scott McKenzie.
The Eagles, now 3-2-1, will play York on Wednesday, Sept. 21 before starting conference play that following Saturday.
