OBERLIN, Ohio – The Juniata College women's tennis team opened its fall season at the Oberlin Invite this past weekend. After the tournament was delayed for weather, the Eagles put together a strong showing on day one winning all three doubles match ups.
The Eagles opened singles action on Saturday with wins from freshman Rachel Yurchisin (Cleveland, OH), and sophomores Mitsuki Koh (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) and Tori Gray (York, Pa./Central York).
"Tori was more consistent this weekend than she has been in the past," said head coach Jason Cohen. "She was very good all weekend and played at the same level in all of her matches and that helped her out a lot."
Gray finished and overall 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles action with Koh. Gray was awarded Landmark Conference player of the week for her performance at the Oberlin Invite.
Yurchisin and partner Jacklyn Renninger (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) also finished the weekend 2-1 in doubles with the final doubles pair of senior Megan Phillips (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and junior Heather Waring (San Antonio, Texas/John Jay) again finishing 2-1.
"It was a really good starts to the season," said Cohen. "Any time you play a tournament where everyone is individually on their own it's always good to win more than you lose and the girls did a lot better than that. They did better even than I expected so I was pretty pleased with the start."
Overall on the weekend, the Eagles finished 12-6 in singles and 6-3 in doubles play. After a long weekend at Oberlin, Juniata is next slated to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional at Mary Washington next Friday-Sunday, Sept. 20-22.
"Both tournaments are long weekends with a lot more matches than you play in season with a dual match where you really only play once," said Cohen. "Getting the hang of a long tournament will help them be mentally and physically prepared for a long weekend of tennis next weekend."
