HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Several records were set and broken for the Juniata College women's outdoor track and field team during the 2014 season. Juniata received five all-conference nods, they finished third at the Landmark Conference championships for the sixth time in seven years, and three Eagles earned league titles.
Juniata had tremendous performances on the track from four-year veterans and newcomers alike. Senior Katrina Woods (Shirleysburg, Pa./Mount Union) capped off her illustrious career as the 5K champion and runner-up in the 800m and 1,500m runs at the Landmark championships. Her time of 17:12.54 at the Bison Outdoor Classic (April 12) broke her previous Landmark 5K record by over a minute and set a new program record.
She repeated the feat a week later at the Widener Invitational (April 18) in the 1,500m run. Her time of 4:39.61 broke her previous program record and set a new Landmark record in the process. She also ran the program's fastest 3K in a personal record (PR) time of 10:21.47 at the Paul Kaiser Invite (April 26) and now sits in the record books as arguably the best distance runner in program history.
Senior Evelyn Edwards (Carbondale, Pa./Carbondale) set a PR in the 100m dash at championships to earn the team's top time. And senior Paula Pryor (Westbrookville, N.Y./Burke Catholic) made the most of her track debut after spending four seasons on the women's soccer team. She won the 200m Landmark title at championships and recorded one of the programs top five times in the event (26.15) at the Widener Invitational (April 18).
Her time of 57.99 in the 400m dash tied the program record time set back 2004 and was the second fastest in the Landmark this season. Pryor also put her name in the record books for running the fourth fastest 800m in program history (2:20.30) during the Swarthmore Final Qualifier (May 12), her first time ever running the race.
With a 12:12.27 time in the 3K steeplechase at the Widener Invite (April 18), junior Courtney Peterson (York, Pa./Central York) ran a personal best and recorded the third fastest time in program history. Her time of 41:58.10 in the 10K at Messiah (April 10) was also the team-best and a PR.
In the field, freshman Katelyn Fisher (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) took the high jump crown at championships after clearing a personal best 1.57m. The mark placed her fifth on the program's all-time performance list.
And junior Kylie Berrena (Petersburg, Pa./Juniata Valley) and sophomore Alissa Sellers (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) also recorded top time personal records. Berrena's 34.64m distance in the javelin was the fourth best in the Landmark. Sellers recorded the fifth longest distance in the league triple jump (10.05m) at Messiah (April 10).
