Johnston, Koehler Homer in Sunday Landmark Conference Action
HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata baseball team dropped a heartbreaker to Elizabethtown in extra innings, 10-7, Sunday afternoon at Langdon Goodale.
Zach Johnston led the Eagles with a 5-5 day that included a home run, a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Matthew Koehler was 3-4 with a home run, a double, a walk, and two runs scored. Charlie Bakken was 1-5 with a double and two runs scored, while Jace Irvin was 2-5 with two runs scored.
Elizabethtown got on the board first, scoring off a solo homer to left in the first and tacking on another run with a sacrifice fly to left in the third.
Koehler mashed the Eagles onto the board with a solo blast to left in the bottom half of the inning. Later in the inning, Johnston walloped a double to score Irvin.
The Blue Jays answered with an RBI single to center in the fourth, and the Eagles countered with Bakken's two-run double that scored Koehler and Jackson Cunnane to make it 4-3.
The teams traded runs over the next few innings, with Johnston's homer giving the Eagles a two-run lead that the Blue Jays erased by the top half of the seventh. Ethan Pfeffer gave the Eagles the lead back on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning, 7-6.
The Eagles got the Blue Jays down to their final out in the ninth, but an unfortunate bounce of the baseball through the infield allowed a game-tying run to score. In the bottom of the ninth, Johnston singled to right, and Blank bunted him over, but the Eagles couldn't drive in the winning run.
Elizabethtown scored three runs on three hits in the top half of the tenth, and Juniata couldn't find three runs in the bottom half.
The Eagles will return to action Tuesday at Susquehanna, with first pitch at 3:30.
