HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's soccer team lost a bruising 1-0 match to visiting Case Western Reserve, Sunday afternoon at Gibbel Stadium.
Maxwell Mattioni stood tall in goal for the Eagles, making five saves and stopping several other CWRU opportunities.
The Eagles outshot the visitors in the first half 3-2, as Nick Mattioni fired wide left of the goal and Jalen Holliday's effort late in the half fizzed over the bar.
The second half saw the game intensify as it got more physical.
In the 73rd minute, the Spartans curved in a free kick from the left side. Their forward rose above everyone and headed the ball just past M. Mattioni's outreached hands into the bottom right corner of the net.
The Eagles pushed for an equalizer in the final 17 minutes, with N. Mattioni smashing a shot off the crossbar in the 87th minute, the Eagles' best opportunity.
Case Western fended off the Eagles the rest of the match.
JC had an advantage in shots 9-8 and in corners 4-3.
The Eagles will return to action Friday at 5:00 as they host Mount Aloysius.
